Multi-step skincare routines and “one-size-fits-all” product recommendations that spread rapidly across digital platforms can weaken the skin barrier and increase acne, particularly among younger users. Experts emphasize that unconscious product use not only worsens breakouts but may also increase the risk of permanent scarring over time.

In recent years, skincare trends spreading through social media platforms have made beauty routines more visible than ever before. Until a few years ago, skincare habits were largely shaped by dermatologists and professional recommendations. Today, however, routines are often influenced by influencer videos, short-form content, and trending product suggestions. to experts, this rapid flow of information also brings serious misinformation and improper practices. Multi-step skincare routines, the simultaneous use of strong active ingredients, and frequent product switching, which have become popular especially among young people, can negatively affect skin health.

Medical Aesthetic Physician Dr. Gökay Furkan Özkoç notes that blindly following skincare advice circulating on social media can lead to irritation, increased sensitivity, and a rise in acne.

“One of the most common mistakes in skincare is trying to use every trending product at the same time. However, skin biology functions within a highly delicate balance. When this balance is disrupted, acne, redness, and sensitivity can become inevitable,” says Özkoç, adding that individuals in adolescence should be particularly cautious. issue

Because it is common during adolescence, acne is often considered a temporary skin condition. In reality, however, it is the result of an ongoing inflammatory process within the skin. Experts warn that when this process is not properly managed, not only can the number of active breakouts increase, but the risk of permanent scarring later in life can also rise.

Several factors can contribute to acne development, including hormonal changes, genetic predisposition, stress, dietary habits, and environmental influences. For this reason, the course and severity of acne can vary from one individual to another.

According to Dr. Özkoç, one of the most significant problems is that acne is often underestimated and treated with random or unverified methods.

“Acne is actually a sign of an inflammatory process occurring in the skin. If this process is not controlled, the skin tissue may become damaged, which can create a foundation for scar formation in the future.”

Incorrect interventions increase the risk of scarring

Uninformed interventions are considered one of the leading causes of acne scars. Squeezing pimples, attempting to dry them out with alcohol-based products, or applying uncontrolled peeling treatments can intensify inflammation within the skin.

Dr. Özkoç highlights that these common habits, especially among young people, pose significant risks for skin health.

“Squeezing pimples or trying to dry them with harsh chemical products deepens the inflammation in the skin. This not only prolongs the healing process but also increases the likelihood of permanent scarring.”

As inflammation penetrates deeper into the skin, the likelihood of tissue damage increases. For this reason, experts stress that acne should be managed carefully rather than aggressively treated.

Social media routines may weaken the skin barrier

In recent years, “10-step skincare routines” and the intensive use of active ingredients have become increasingly popular among young social media users. However, these routines can place considerable stress on the skin barrier.

The simultaneous use of powerful active components such as retinol, AHA, BHA, vitamin C, and exfoliating ingredients can weaken the skin barrier and lead to increased sensitivity.

According to Dr. Özkoç, this situation may further aggravate acne.

“Every skin type is different. A product recommended on social media may be beneficial for some individuals but could trigger acne in another skin type. Using multiple active ingredients at the same time can disrupt the skin barrier.”

When the skin barrier weakens, symptoms such as dryness, redness, sensitivity, and new acne breakouts may appear.

Five key recommendations to prevent acne scars

According to experts, adopting the right skincare habits plays a major role in both controlling acne and reducing the risk of scarring.

Dr. Özkoç shares the following recommendations for maintaining a healthy skincare routine:

* Avoid applying social media trends exactly as seen

* Do not use multiple strong active ingredients simultaneously

* Choose products suitable for your skin type with expert guidance

* Support the skin barrier with appropriate care before and after treatments

* Seek professional evaluation promptly if acne worsens or recurs

“Social media content can provide ideas, but it cannot replace medical treatment,” says Özkoç, noting that unconscious product use, especially among younger age groups, may worsen acne.

Personalized approaches stand out in scar treatment

Once the active acne process is brought under control, medical aesthetic treatments can be planned to reduce the appearance of scars. Laser systems, controlled chemical peeling procedures, and treatments that support skin regeneration are among the methods used in this stage.

However, experts emphasize that every skin type and scar structure is different.

Dr. Özkoç highlights the importance of individualized planning in scar treatment:

“Every scar type and every skin is different. The treatment method, session intervals, and supportive care protocol should always be determined after a detailed personal evaluation. The goal is to support the skin’s natural renewal capacity and achieve a more balanced and healthy appearance.”

Early intervention can protect the skin’s future

Timing plays a critical role in acne treatment. When active lesions are controlled at an early stage, the underlying skin damage remains limited and the risk of scarring can decrease significantly.

According to Dr. Özkoç, unconscious product use and inconsistent skincare routines can make the process more complicated.

“The earlier acne is managed correctly, the lower the risk of permanent scarring. With treatments planned at an early stage and proper skincare guidance, both inflammation can be controlled and the skin’s collagen structure can be preserved.”

Although beauty trends spreading rapidly across digital platforms have increased interest in skincare, experts underline that one fundamental rule remains unchanged:

Every skin is different, and a healthy skincare routine must be planned according to individual needs.

Dr. Özkoç offers one final reminder:

“Not every product seen on social media is suitable for every skin. Timely medical evaluation during the acne process can play a significant role in protecting long-term skin health.”
