Polifarma CEO Dr. Pharmacist Başbuğ Öke has emphasized that achieving Türkiye’s goal of healthcare self-sufficiency depends not only on investments in research and development but also on building a highly qualified workforce. According to Öke, the pharmaceutical industry has evolved into a strategic career field where science and technology advance hand in hand.
He noted that rapid progress in technology, biotechnology investments, and personalized medicine is transforming the pharmaceutical sector while reshaping the skills and expertise required by the industry.
Highlighting the importance of career planning for university students and recent graduates, Öke said that today’s young researchers will develop tomorrow’s healthcare solutions. “Türkiye’s journey toward full healthcare self-sufficiency can only be achieved through a strong scientific and R&D ecosystem. The foundation of that ecosystem is a well-trained and highly qualified workforce,” he said.
A Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Ecosystem
Öke explained that modern drug development extends far beyond laboratory research, encompassing artificial intelligence-supported discovery, advanced manufacturing technologies, and digital innovation. “Our industry offers diverse career opportunities for pharmacists, chemists, chemical engineers, biologists, molecular biology and genetics specialists, bioengineers, physicians, and biotechnology researchers,” he said.
He stressed that pharmacists play critical roles throughout the pharmaceutical value chain—from R&D and manufacturing to quality assurance, regulatory affairs, and medical operations—and underlined the need for more highly qualified pharmacists and researchers to support Türkiye’s healthcare independence goals.
POLAr-Ge Provides New Career Opportunities
Pointing to Polifarma’s advanced technology investments, Öke highlighted the company’s POLAr-Ge Center as a hub for next-generation pharmaceutical innovation.
Research activities at the center include active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) development, antisense oligonucleotide technologies, mRNA platforms, and innovative therapies for rare diseases—all considered key areas shaping the future of medicine.
“Success in these strategic fields requires not only state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure but also talented researchers capable of leading these projects. Scientific curiosity, a commitment to lifelong learning, effective use of digital technologies, and an interdisciplinary mindset are among the most valuable competencies for future professionals,” he said.
Investing in Young Talent
Öke stated that Polifarma offers young professionals much more than workplace experience by providing a comprehensive development ecosystem.
Through the Necdet Nuri Kumrulu Scholarship Fund, established to honor the legacy of the company’s founder, Polifarma supports equal opportunities in education while helping young people prepare for their future careers.
The company also connects students with real-world projects through its Graduate Development Program and extensive university-industry collaborations, enabling them to gain practical experience before graduation.
Building a Human-Centered Workplace
Beyond professional development, Polifarma places strong emphasis on employee well-being and psychological safety.
Alongside its Mother and Baby Academy, the company has established a variety of volunteer-based employee communities, including the Medicine-Like Book Club, English Speaking Club, Politempo Music Club, Green Collars, and Polipatiseverler (Animal Lovers Club).
According to Öke, these initiatives help build up a vibrant corporate culture that prioritizes employee well-being, engagement, and personal development while fostering an inclusive and supportive working environment.
